Marmalade, 2018

Plywood, metal hinges, fabric, archival pigment print on vinyl, crayon, colored pencil, thread, magnets, wire, handles
4 x 6 x 6 feet

Marmalade was an exhibition on view at The Fort in Brooklyn from February 3 - March 18. The room-sized sculpture of an open book originates from a novella I wrote in third grade; I was nine. Marmalade is broken into less than twenty pages with slanted oversized handwriting. The story of an orange cat plays out, with an illustration of orange matted fur forming the connective tissue of an autobiography. Marmalade's name appears 26 times in the book – as many letters as are in the alphabet, sometimes intact, sometimes interrupted with a line break. The fear of being replaced and the fear of being forgotten, mixed with the aspiration to disappear and the aspiration to be found, are all in this first work, as well as the aspiration to anonymity.

Catwalk Informed By a Priest, 2016

Wood, foam, metal brackets, acrylic paint, digital prints on backlit film, vinyl skylights with glass
Four 2’2” x 20’ x 2’ walkways, two 6’ x 4’ drop-down ceilings, two 6’ x 1’4” x 1” ladders, four 22” x 17” photographs (photo credit: Erik Gould)
Catwalk Informed by a Priest included four sculptures with inset photographs - mixed-media works, reminiscent of theatrical sets with balconies, windows and catwalks - accompanied by a printed loose-leaf interview with Father McAlister, O.P., navigating his intertwined domestic and creative life with Dominican Catholic priest and sculptor Father Thomas McGlynn, O.P. The work was made in response to a year long observation of the Thomas McGlynn Sculpture Collection and Studio at Providence College, a collection curated by Father McAlister. Our interview was conducted inside a recreated Italian apartment on the grounds of Providence College, a replica of the original apartment he once lived in with Father McGlynn. The interview discusses the room, accurate within one half inch of the original, as a conduit for the sculptor's body; its domestic contents include intermingled possessions of Father McAlister, Father McGlynn, and prop objects belonging to neither person, but to the room as a fabricated stand-in. The exhibition was on view at Providence College Galleries from August 24 - October 8, 2016.

Traces to Form Concrete Thoughts, 2015

Wood, foam, paint, vines, gravel, digital pigment print bound into storybook with open leaves, garden table with oil lamp, chair, cup and saucer with spoon, laminated novel, gelatin silver prints, music stand, stage light
Wall and platform sized 8 x 5 x 10 feet, digital pigment print sized 10 x 32 inches
A carved rock wall surrounds a window open onto an oversized photograph of a body adrift in still water. A raised platform, fabricated to look like a chunk of raw open ground, invites the viewer into the scene. The construction takes as its starting point the rumored discovery of King Ludwig II afloat in Lake Starnberg in 1886. Staged indoors, the stone facade is suggestive neither of being outside nor inside, so much as of being elsewhere. Traces to Form Concrete Thoughts was included in a 2015 group exhibition called Compound Lens in the Ewing Gallery at The University of Tennessee.

Book of Correspondences, 2007 - ongoingArchive of digital files, pigment prints, autobiographical writings and letters
Book of Correspondences documents the attempt to reclaim my photographic portrait through engagement with an archive of images from which I am now denied access. The project draws from lived experience, framing my account of a series of photographs I made between 2007 and 2009 with another artist who had once been my professor. He is pictured in the photographs, as am I. We were not collaborators, but two people sharing a group of images. He passed away of natural causes on the day that I removed these photographs from exhibition in a gallery. I own a few thousand of the archival images, the entire body of 10,000 photographs deleted by the University that temporarily gained possession of the larger digital archive of the professor's oeuvre. My effort to narrativize a web of legal and imagined ownerships is approached through an ongoing edit of the photographs, contact sheets, autobiographical writings, and correspondences between myself, the deceased artist and university lawyers.

Self Portraits, 2007Archival pigment prints, both photographs and text
Each 20 x 30 inches
These photographs, with a final selection of 28 from a series including hundreds, were shot in the bathroom and other rooms in my apartment, a routine that was a part of my daily life for six months. I often put my camera into the medicine cabinet and treated it as a mirror.

	Mannequins, 2004Gelatin silver prints
Each 15.6 x 24 inches
While employed as a live mannequin in a clothing store, I incorporated a 35 mm camera into the window display, the shutter release cord hidden in my clothing. I posed without moving. When each passerby realized that I was alive, I shot a portrait of the stranger standing on the other side of the glass.
